Best Recurve and Long Bows for the Money 2020

When it comes to hunting, bow hunting is one of the most rewarding ways of hunting. Bow hunting is not like hunting with a rifle, you need to get within a closer proximity to the animal and depending on the type of animal you’re going after this can be an extreme challenge. This may entail baiting, stalking, a combination of the two, setting up trail cameras, and of course, a little luck never hurts.

Another thing that needs to be taken into consideration is the amount of time it takes to become proficient with accurately shooting a bow and arrow. This takes countless hours of practice and dedication. Regardless if you choose to shoot a longbow, recurve or compound bow, you will need hour of practice before venturing out into the woods and attempting to get the trophy buck. Using a recurve bow gives you a great sense of pride relative to using a compound bow or crossbow.

In this post you will be shown some of the top longbows and recurve bows currently on the market. We hope this helps you to identify which bow is right for you and your specific needs and we also made sure to include a practice bow that is ideal for younger archers trying to learn how to properly and accurately aim and shoot a bow. Here are our picks of the best recurve and longbows for the money in 2020.

Southwest Archery Spyder Takedown Recurve Bow and Arrow Set Review

The Southwest Archery Spyder is available in both right handed and left handed versions with draw weights of between 20lb and 60lb, increasing in 5lb increments. It features pre-installed threaded bushings for any accessory upgrade that you might need.

It also has reinforced limb tips that allow the bow to be both Fast Flight and Flemish string compatible. This makes it perfect for a variety of purposes, be it target practice, deer hunting, or bow fishing. Made with a combination of four different woods, this package comes with a pair of matching limbs. It also includes a 14 strand Dacron string and an adhesive arrow rest. You are also provided with detailed instructions via a step-by-step photographic guide.

You are given the option to include a stringer, which will arrive with your bow if you choose this. This is a really great option to have as having a stringer is the only safe way to assemble your bow, so you won’t be able to do anything without one. This is a great bow, not just for beginners. It is prone to a little limb warp, however, and won’t stand up to a lot of wear and tear so it may be best used for practice until you move up a weight.

Pros

  • Fast Flight and Flemish string compatible
  • Comes with optional stringer
  • Adhesive arrow rest

Cons

  • Prone to limb warp
  • Not as durable as other brands

Longbowmaker Hungarian Style Handmade Longbow Review

Longbowmaker-Hungarian-style-Handmade-Longbow

With the Longbowmaker Hungarian style Longbow, one of the best things about it is the range of draw weight that it can come with. Starting at just 20lb and going up to a whopping 110lb, this is a bow for any type of archer, from novice to expert. It’s a good bow to take out hunting, but will work equally well if you are just looking to undertake some target practice.

It even comes with a detailed instruction booklet which gives a step by step guide of how to string your bow if you are not confident with the process. Made of beech wood, leather and glass steel, this bow has a body length of 145 cm and a string length of 131 cm. The string that it arrives with isn’t of the best quality for most archers, but this can easily be replaced with something more to your taste.

This bow is very good value for money, and will shoot time and time again with accuracy. After a while, it is prone to some chipping but it can withstand a lot more wear than many others varieties in a more expensive price range.

Pros

  • Has a great draw weight range
  • Suitable for novices and experts
  • Good value for money

Cons

  • Sting it comes with isn’t great
  • Prone to chipping over time

Southwest Archery Spyder XL Takedown Recurve Bow Review

Southwest-Archery-Spyder-XL-Takedown-Recurve-Bow

The Southwest Archery Spyder XL is designed by the same developers of the original Sage; it uses a combination of four naturally sourced woods to create what is really a lovely looking bow. In fact, it’s so nice to look at that you’ll almost not want to use it.

The handcrafted riser is wonderfully smooth and rounded, and are as appealing as the pair of matching limbs and 14 strand Dracon string. It comes in draw weights of between 30lb and 55lb, with 5lb increments. This is a little bit on the heavier side so complete novices should be aware of this as a lighter bow is usually better for those new to archery. It is designed for anyone with a draw length of over 28 inches.

The pre-installed threaded bushings it comes with are suitable for various accessory upgrades, such as mechanical rests, sights, quivers and even bow fishing reels. It is suitable for both Fast Flight and Flemish strings as the tips are reinforced. Should you need one, you can add a stringer to the package, which is necessary for a new bow. A guide containing detailed step-by-step instructions with photographs for its use is included. This bow is prone to some limb warp unfortunately, but overall it is more durable than some of the other Southwest models.

Pros

  • Beautifully made
  • Heavier draw weights
  • Designed for those who draw over 20 inches
  • Smooth and rounded riser

Cons

  • Prone to some limb warp
  • Not great for the archery novice

Samick Sage Takedown Recurve Review

Samick-Sage-Takedown-Recurve-Bow

The Sammick Sage bundle is a 62 inch bow which is made of hard maple and black fiberglass; it has a single tapered knob and metal limb pocket. This bundle also comes with a B-50 bow string, and adhesive arrow rest ideal for broadhead arrows, as well as a stringer tool.

It has a recommended maximum draw length of 29 inches and a recommended brace height of 7.5 – 8.25 inches. It comes with pre-installed brass bushings for extra accessories if you choose that you want them. This can include the Samick Sage hunting kit, a brass plunger, stabilizer and sight.

Detailed instructions for its use is included by way of a step-by-step photographic guide. This bow is an excellent option for both new archers and experts. The riser is comfortable in the hand, though the one thing it is perhaps missing is a string nock, which is not included as part of the package. This bow is extremely durable and is excellent quality for a low price point. It far exceeds the quality of other bows that are far more expensive. The stringer tool that it comes with is not the best, however, this doesn’t impact the quality of the bow.

Pros

  • Good for beginners and experts
  • Comfortable riser
  • Durable and high quality
  • Good price point

Cons

  • Doesn’t come with a string nock
  • Stringer isn’t very good

BONUS: Bear Archery Titan Bow (For Beginners) Review

Bear-Archery-Titan-Bow

Bear Archery is known for making high quality bows for youth archers and the Titan Youth Bow set is no different. It arrives ready to shoot and comes with two safety glass arrows as well as a target. In addition to this, you will also receive a sign pin, finger tab, arm guard and arrow quiver. The set is recommended for children ages 12 and up, and is also the perfect beginner bow for a petite adult.

It has a 20-29 pound draw weight and 22 to 18 inch draw length range, so is perfect for beginners wanting to test their technique. It’s not the most durable bow on the market, and certainly not the longest lasting. However, both adolescents and adults alike will get hours of enjoyment out of the contents of this set. The 60 inch long bow has composite limbs that may be too long for some, however, it is completely ambidextrous and arrives ready to use.

It is an inexpensive bow, and while the attached string may need to be replaced, it is a good purchase for anyone who wants an introduction to archery for themselves or their family.

Pros

  • Arrives ready to shoot with two safety glass arrows
  • For adults and adolescents
  • Perfect for beginners
  • Inexpensive

Cons

  • Not that durable
  • String may need to be replaced
  • May be too long for some
